Who is at higher risk

  • A parent or sibling with diabetes
  • Excess weight, particularly around the abdomen
  • Little physical activity
  • High blood pressure or raised cholesterol
  • Diabetes during a previous pregnancy

Early symptoms not to ignore

  • Passing urine frequently, especially at night
  • Excessive thirst and hunger
  • Unexplained weight loss and tiredness
  • Blurred vision
  • Wounds that heal slowly, or recurring infections

Prevention that works

  • Cut back on sugary drinks, refined carbohydrates and large portions
  • Build meals around vegetables, beans, fruit and whole grains
  • Move for at least 150 minutes a week
  • Lose 5–10% of body weight if you are overweight
  • Screen your blood sugar yearly if you carry any risk factor
